Stabbing Pains on my left side
Question:
Well this has been happening for a while now, it comes and goes at no
warning and before I know it Im staring at the wall waiting for the
pain to go. I havent really thought about it for a while and maybe
the last time it happened was approx 2 months ago. Well it happened
again about 10 minutes ago and so I deiced to find out what the hell
this is. I am concerned and kinda frightened about going to the
doctor to discover something bad is happening to me that maybe
irreversible. I am more worried about telling the wife, and worrying
her. I describe the pain as a stabbing pain, although Ive never
been stabbed it seems to pulsate ever second or so. I would give the
pain approx 5-10 if that makes any sense. what I would like is to
be told its normal and it happens to everyone, but I know this is
stupid and its time to get sorted out. I do plan on going to the
quacks to get it at least diagnosed, but before I do so has anyone
has this same experience? Im 26, I think my diet could be better,
Im 6"3 and weight 120lbs if that helps, I also smoke.

Answer:
Hey ndrinker, how are you doing? The developement of stones is one
of the most common kidney disorders; it is a disease of middle age and
occurs more frequently in men. Why stones form in some people and not
others is not known. Much depends on the size and location of the
stones. Small stone can often be passed without incident. Large
stones, on occasion, remain "silent" without symptoms. But generally
larger stones obstruct the ureter (the tube connecting the kidney to
the bladder), precipitating an excruciating, spasmodic pain in the
small of the back that can radiate from the kidney across the
abdoninal into the groin and genitalia. It can be one of the worst
agonies that afflict man. Some possible factors linked to this
disorder are: urine stagnation resulting from a blockage that gives
chemicals in the kidneys a chance to solidify; disordered uric acid
metabolism, like gout; abnormal function of the parathyroid gland;
poor calcium metabolism; excess drinking of milk and cream
(particularly in special diets); over-dosage with Vitamin D; and long
immobilization. One factor that do not contribute to the formation of
kidney stones is the hardness of water. Small stones without
complications should be treated conservatively by tring to induce the
stone to pass into the urine and out. The patient is given large
amounts of fluid, three or more quarts daily, antispasmodic
medication, and morphine to control the pain. When the stone is too
large to pass and begins to provoke complications --infection, severe
bleeding, hydronephrosis, and blockage of the ureter-- surgical
removal may be neccessary. The complications must be treated
simultaneously; infections controlled; and immobilized patients kept
in some form of physical movement and on a diet instituted to avoid
further inlargement and development of stones. This is a MEDICAL
ALERT that can turn into a MEDICAL EMERGENCY! Lack of treatment can
result in total urine suppression, which, if not relieved, will cause
death. Best wishes

appointment with your doctor or go to a walk-in clinic. You need to
tell them that you would like them you would like an Abdominal
Ultrasound to rule out anything abnormal. Your pain could be due to a
number of reasons but it is definitely not normal and does not happen
to everyone. You need to get a it checked out. Please don't put it
off.
