There's not much difference between m'sia and s'pore really in terms of the food and language they speak. Most can converse in english, cantonese and mandarin if you're in KL and penang.
About shopping, try one utama or midvalley megamall. Thats where the local shops. They've lots more choices there and prices are pretty good too.
And about pirated stuffs, try checking out batu ferringhi in penang. You can get 3-4 RM per DVD if you buy 50 or above, if i am not wrong.
