Bayern ace could be forced to retire
Question:
Bayern Munich's recent £6M purchase Sebastian Deisler could be forced to retire after undergoing another operation on his knee. Deisler had an operation seven months ago, but broke down again while playing for Germany recently and was forced to undergo a new operation last week. Professor of orthopedy Wolfgang Pforringer commented: "If the player has sustained a serious knee injury he must revise his football ambitions as he puts his health under threat." Answer: Bayern and Germans count the cost on injured Deisler Sebastian Deisler of Germany SEOUL, May 29 (AFP) - Germany and Bayern Munich will have to sit down and count the cost of the serious injury which has forced Sebastian Deisler out of the World Cup. The president of the German Football Federation (DFB), Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder, said Wednesday that both sides would have to thrash out a deal where Bayern receive compensation following the 22-year-old's injury suffered in the friendly win over Austria earlier this month. Bayern's manager Uli Hoeness believes the DFB should stump up some cash as Deisler, whom Bayern have just signed from Hertha Berlin, will be out of action for six months. Mayer-Vorfelder said it needed to be established whether the injury wehich displaced a kneecap was wholly new or a recurrence. Deisler had only returned to competitive football on May 4 after a leg muscle injury kept him out for a month and before that had been out from October to March after requiring knee surgery. "We will sit down with Bayern. We have to work out a few questions regarding insurance, as he insjured at the club but also of course via the DFB for internationals," explained Mayer-Vorfelder, who is attending FIFA's pre-World Cup extraordinary congress here. A spokesman for Germany's players association indicated current legislation covered a German international being injured in training whether with his club or the national team, following similar cases in the past with former stars Steffen Freund and Matthias Sammer at Euro 96. Germany face Saudi Arabia, the Republic of Ireland and Cameroon in Group E as they bid for a fourth title after 1954, 1974 and 1990. But they do so without Bayern Munich attacking midfielder Mehmet Scholl, who ruled himself out for lack of fitness, Bayer Leverkusen central defender Jens Nowotny (torn knee ligaments) and Deisler, as well as Dortmund defender Christian Worns (knee).
