Uruguay without 10 players for warm-up
SINGAPORE, May 21 (Reuters) - Uruguay's World Cup warm-up match against Singapore later on Tuesday is likely to be a low-key affair after the South Americans flew in from Japan without 10 of their squad members.
Several Uruguayans were unwilling to make the long flight from Japan to Singapore after a tiring season of European club football which ended only two weeks ago.
But, even without talent like Alvaro Recoba (Inter Milan), Paolo Montero (Juventus), Dario Silva (Malaga) and Sebastian Abreu (Cruz Azul), the match will be a doddle as Uruguay prepare for their opening group A game against Denmark in Ulsan, South Korea on June 1.
'This is really a waste of time, but we were told we had to go. Only some senior players like Recoba were given a choice,' said one player who asked not to be named. 'But what must be done must be done.'
The Uruguay squad arrived in Singapore on Monday evening after scoring an easy 2-0 victory in a friendly against first-time World Cup qualifiers China in Guangdong last Thursday.
Coach Victor Pua put his players through their paces in training late on Monday, but it never looked more than a stretching session after several hours on a plane.
The 17-man party seemed to enjoy it, including the four who were left out of the final 23 named in the World Cup squad.
'We accepted what was offered to us,' Pua said through an interpreter when asked why his team bothered to take the roundabout route to South Korea from China and Japan, where the team had been since their win in Guangdong last week.
'I don't deal with administration, so I am not really in a position to comment on that.'
Among those who did make the trip was Daniel Fonseca of Juventus, who failed to make the final World Cup squad because of a foot injury.
The match against a mediocre Singapore team will present players like Manchester United striker Diego Forlan and Juventus goalkeeper Fabian Carini with the chance to claim a place in the starting line-up for the World Cup opener against Denmark.
Uruguay will also meet world champions France and Senegal in group A next month.

Uruguay struggle to save face in World Cup warm up against lowly Singapore
SINGAPORE, May 21 (AFP) - Two goals from Richard Morales, one in each half, saved Uruguay from a near embarrassing result as they closed their World Cup preparations with a 2-1 win over football minnows Singapore Tuesday.
Morales opened the scoring midway through the first half, neatly finishing off a fine cross from Manchester United's Diego Forlan who had opened up Singapore's right flank.
He added his second goal with 15 minutes remaining when he was left unmarked near the far post from a corner kick.
Substitute Indra Sahdan Daud brought the tireless Singapore back into the game with a penalty five minutes later after he was brought down in front of the goal by Uruguay keeper Federico Elduayen.
The game closed out with Singapore going close three more times as Uruguay wilted in the high humidity.
It was a far from satisfying performance for the South American unit which repeatedly found holes in the Singaporean defence for most of the game but laboured when it came to finding the goal.
Coach Victor Pua tried to put on a brave face, but conceded after the match that his frontline 11 was far from sorted and said there may be a need to squeeze in a further warm up match.
"It was a good practice for the World Cup, but every game you play raises new questions," he said.
"The physical state of each player is being looked at, and we are trying out positions, switching players around to see the best combinations."
Pua denied speculation that the Uruguay players, ranked 24th in the world, resented leaving their base camp in Japan to travel to Singapore for a match against the 113th ranked side.
"None of the Uruguay players thought this game was a waste of time. They played with total seriousness ... but Singapore were stronger in the second half as our players felt the humidity," he said
Forlan and Morales impressed throughout, creating several opportunities but the absence of a handful of leading players showed in a mistake-riddled performance.
Ten of the 23-member squad -- including headliners Alvaro Recoba, Paolo Montero, Dario Silva and Sebastian Abreu -- opted to stay in Japan where the squad has been based since beating China 2-0 last week.
The goal scoring skills of Inter Milan's Recoba were sorely missed as Uruguay misfired more than a dozen times in the first half, and the shortage of substitutes told as they faded late in the game.
The crowd, officially listed at 23,834 but appearing less than half that, found plenty to cheer about as the home side more than held their own against the rugged tackling Uruguayans, and they were eventually rewarded with Daud's goal.
Uruguay, known as Celeste (Sky Blue), are twice winners of football's supreme trophy including the inaugral 1930 tournament, but have not played in a World Cup since 1990.
They were late qualifiers for the 2002 tournament, beating Australia in a play-off for the final spot.
They have been drawn in Group A with France, Senegal and Denmark.
