How they shape up after their opening games
SEOUL, June 5 (AFP) - They say you cannot judge a team by a single game and it is certainly true that when it comes to the World Cup, a poor showing in the opening match is no barrier to a successful campaign,
But more often than not the first performance is a useful guide to a team's form, if not necessarily their prospects of advancement.
With all 32 teams having now come through their first encounter, without a goalless draw among the 16 matches - a World Cup record - it is time to assess the action to date.
Pride of place is shared equally by Senegal and Germany, with the United States and joint hosts South Korea close behind.
Among the favourites, Argentina, Italy and Brazil did just enough to indicate why they will be forces to be reckoned with, Spain showed hints of why a lot of money is suddenly riding on their chances but holders France came badly unstuck.
Denmark and Sweden justified their billing a possible surprise packages, Turkey and Uruguay were desperately unlucky not to collect a point while England and Nigeria's chances appear to have been considerably overrated.
The other winners, Costa Rica, Mexico and Russia were all facing mediocre opposition in China, Croatia and Tunisia while Belgium and Japan, Paraguay and South Africa and Ireland and Cameroon shared the spoils but gave no indication of being likely to set the World Cup on fire.
But for Ecuador, Slovenia, Croatia, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Poland defeat was more or less predictable and an early sign that they will not make it into the second round.
Senegal's celebrated 1-0 opening day victory over holders France is already being talked about as one of the great upsets of all-time, on a par with North Korea's 1966 1-0 win over Italy in England and even more remarkable than Cameroon's 1990 opening match defeat of Argentina.
Whether they can reproduce the commitment and confidence against Denmark and Uruguay remains to be seen - and for the Senegalese it will probably matter little.
They have had their moment in the spotlight and the victory the better for coming against their former colonial power, coupled with the fact that most of the team eke out a comparatively modest living in the unfashionable echelons of the French league, while France's millionaire mercenaries mostly earn a fortune overseas.
France, though, can take heart from Argentina's 1990 campaign following that defeat by Cameroon - they went on to make the final, losing by a late penalty to Germany.
The Germans, of course, proved the veracity of another old footballing adage - that when it comes to the World Cup you should never ignore them.
An emphatic 8-0 drubbing of Saudi Arabia was just the tonic Rudi Voller's men needed after being dismissed as also-rans and with qualification for the second round almost assured, they can ease off in their remaining games against Ireland and Cameroon.
The United States, with no real footballing pedigree to speak of, can also justifiably be proud of their 3-2 upset win over Portugal, led by Luis Figo and tipped by many to make the semi-finals at least..
The people of South Korea firmly believe their team is destined to win the World Cup and they got off to a bright start which set the country alight when they beat Poland 2-0.
But the Poles are a shadow of what they once were and look set for an early exit. The United States and Portugal will provide a more realistic test of the Koreans' abilities.
Argentina struggled to break down a determined Nigeria with a single goal and Italy's 2-0 stroll (in the first half, at least,) against Ecuador showed little more than that Christian Vieri is in goalscoring form and a threat to be reckoned with.
Spain, meanwhile, coasted comfortably through 3-1 against Slovenia, who failed to live up to their billing as surprise packages, as the Spaniards showed why many people fancy them to win the trophy for the first time with a solid, disciplined display.
Denmark's dismissal of Uruguay with a late second goal by Jon Dahl Tomasson means they are again being spoken of as potential surprise packages, even if the Uruguayans deserved a point from the encounter and have to work hard to qualify.
Sweden also showed great character, coming from a goal down with a spectacular effort to hold England to a draw and maintain a proud record of not having lost to them since 1968, and are now firmly in contention for second place in their group behind Argentina, ready to thwart the hopes of England and Nigeria.
Eight sides have yet to score: China, Croatia, Ecuador, France, Nigeria, Poland, Saudi Arabia and Tunisia.
