CLASH SUNDAY CHARITY SHIELD Chelsea vs Arsenal
Question:
CHELSEA 0: 1/4 ARSENAL Answer: CHELSEA 0: 1/4 ARSENAL Answer: BIG-MATCH FACTS ARSENAL and Chelsea play each other in the FA Community Shield (formerly the Charity Shield) for the first time. These London giants are two of the 25 different clubs to have won this traditional curtain-raiser between the champions of England and the FA Cup winners. The Gunners are making their 19th appearance in the 83rd such pipe opener, and their fourth in successive seasons. They've enjoyed 11 wins outright, since their first success against Sheffield Wednesday in 1930. They've lost five times. The other two matches ended all square after 90 minutes. They finished goalless with Tottenham in 1991 when the Shield was retained for six months by each club, while Manchester United won on penalties after drawing 1-1 with Arsenal at the Millennium Stadium in the season before last. The Premiership runners-up, who beat Manchester United on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes in the FA Cup final in May, could be making their last visit to Cardiff for a final. Although the Millennium Stadium will probably host the Carling Cup final, the new Wembley is expected to be ready to stage next year's climax to the FA Cup. This is the fifth occasion the Shield has been played in the Wales capital - Arsenal's fourth and Chelsea's first. CHELSEA are straining at the leash to embark on the defence of their first League title in half a century and only the second in their 100 years history. Jose Mourinho's record-breaking Premiership champions ended 12 points clear of Arsenal in second place. They bagged an unsurpassed Premiership points tally of 95, won 29 of their 38 fixtures, dropped just 19 points, conceded only 15 goals and kept 25 clean sheets and 34 in all competitions. They would dearly love to strike an early psychological blow in this pre-season showpiece. The Blues first won the League title in 1955, and subsequently beat Newcastle 3-0 in the Charity Shield. Their other three appearances in the Shield were as FA Cup winners. In 1970, they lost 2-1 to Everton, in 1997 they lost on penalties after a 1-1 draw with Manchester United, but in the year 2000, Chelsea retained the silverware with a 2-0 victory over Manchester United. Honours were even in the two Premiership meetings between these clubs last season. The match at Highbury in December ended 2-2 but was remembered for Theirry Henry's quickly taken free kick, while Chelsea were still organising the wall and Petr Cech was taken off guard. The reverse fixture was an enthralling goalless draw, played at electrifying pace. The point against the reigning champions, took Chelsea to within six points of the crown. Mourinho is yet to mastermind a victory over Arsenal. Claudio Ranieri's Chelsea beat the Gunners 1-2 at Highbury in the Champions League Quarter-final second leg in April 2004. Arsenal 'doubled' Chelsea in that Premiership campaign - their most recent victory over the Blues coming in the 1-2 League triumph at Stamford Bridge in February last year. Howard Webb has been selected as the match referee. The 34 year old from Rotherham was in the middle for 23 Premiership matches last season, issuing two red cards and 72 yellow. The only players he dismissed were Gonzalo Sorondo of Crystal Palace and Peter Crouch, then of Southampton - both for violent conduct in the relegation six-pointer at Selhurst Park on 7 May.
