Brazil down Malaysia 4-0 in second half dazzle
Question:
KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 (AFP) - Brazil wrapped up their World Cup build-up with a comfortable 4-0 win over Malaysia Saturday, but coach Luiz Felipe Scolari was left with a lot to think about in finalising his front-line 11.
Brazil's prime players were held to a scoreless draw in the first half, and the game only opened with the liberal use of substitutes in the second spell.
Brazil appeared stunned by Malaysia's watertight defence and a fine performance by goalkeeper Azmin Azram Abdul Aziz who pulled off several impressive saves.
There were positives for Scolari. His highly talented "Triple R" attack force of Rivaldo, Ronaldinho and Ronaldo, accurately fed by Cafu moving up on the right, showed flashes of brilliance moving the ball upfield.
But the pace and skill of the unheralded Malaysians appeared to take them by surprise and they were frequently robbed of the ball close to the net, and Ronaldo conceded he was not yet ready for the World Cup.
"What I'm most concerned about now is to reach the best possible physical condition before the start of the World Cup," said the Brazilian star.
"I feel quite good with my play, and I will take advantage of the week that's left," he said of his effort to return to peak fitness after being plagued with injury.
Asked if he was satisfied with the performance, an unusually reticent Scolari gave little away.
"It was a practice. It served its purpose," he said, singling out the high work rate and tactics of the Malaysian forwards who created several chances but never seriously threatened the Brazilian goal.
"If we wanted a strong opposition we would have played against Germany or Italy, but we wanted an opposition where we could practice."
Rivaldo, in his first game for more than a month, was substituted along with Ronaldinho after an hour, while Ronaldo, on the comeback trail from a lengthy spell of injuries and short of match play was kept on for a further 10 minutes.
The extra work suited Ronaldo well, with his game developing as his time on the field progressed.
Twice he found the goal only to be judged off-side, before scoring legitimately in the 52nd minute.
"We could have scored in the first half if we played with a little more cool," Ronaldo said, before adding: "Anxiety is good before the World Cup and I'm just anxious to start playing because football is what I know how to do."
Juninho, who came on for Kleberson 10 minutes later, scored with his first touch of the ball.
Denilson was always a danger after replacing Edmilson at half time, and his goal was a piece of individual magic.
Picking up a clearing kick after Dida had been forced to dive full-stretch to save a curling Malaysia free kick, Denilson began a solo 50 metre run beating three defenders and the goal keeper to score.
Edilson closed out the scoring for Brazil with just over 10 minutes remaining when he tapped in from a scramble close to the goal mouth.
Brazil have been drawn in Group C, with their first match against Turkey on June 3. China and Costa Rica are in the same group.
