Foe Dies....
Question:
Cameroon international Marc-Vivien Foe died following Thursday evening's Confederations Cup semi-final against Colombia in Lyon. Foe, 28, who spent last season on loan at Manchester City from Lyon, collapsed in the second half of the 1-0 win which took his country into the final. The former West Ham midfielder was rushed to the side of the Stade Gerland pitch where medical staff tried for around 45 minutes to resuscitate the player without success. In a statement issued ahead of the kick-off in France's semi-final against Turkey in Paris, FIFA said: 'FIFA and the world family of football want to give his family and the Cameroon team their condolences.' The match in Paris was preceded by the image of Foe on the stadium's big screen and a minute's silence. Alfred Mueller, FIFA's Swiss medical officer for Lyon, told a news conference this evening: 'After he [Foe] went off the pitch ... we took him to first aid, and the heart stopped in the first aid. The French doctors here did reanimation for 45 minutes and, during this 45 minutes, we had unfortunately absolutely no reaction. 'This is a very sad day for football, for FIFA and for the player's family. This is all we can say at the moment.' FIFA also said there would be an post-mortem to determine the circumstances of the death. Tributes were paid immediately by the player's French club. 'Marc-Vivien Foe will leave us the memory of a charming boy, the incarnation of the joy in life,' Olympique Lyonnais said in a statement on the player's website, which it hosts. 'We will keep of him his bursts of laughter, the music which comes out of the changing room, and his kindness away from the ground. 'Marco, we will not forget you.' Harry Redknapp, who brought Foe to West Ham in 1998, said: 'It's come as such a shock - he was such a powerful, strong man. 'Never have I seen someone in better physical condition than Marc - and you couldn't have met a nicer boy than him. 'Everybody at West Ham loved him and you only have to see the reactions of the French players tonight when they were lining up for the national anthems to see how popular he was in the game. 'Everyone who came into contact with him would have loved the man. He was such a special person and a terrific footballer.' Redknapp, now manager at Portsmouth, concluded: 'Marc was a great young man - it's so sad.' Foe, a powerful midfielder, played 65 times for his country, including three caps won at World Cup 2002 in matches played against the Republic of Ireland, Germany and Saudi Arabia. He made 35 appearances while on loan at Maine Road last season, scoring nine goals. City boss Kevin Keegan was thought to be one of a number of Premiership managers hoping to secure Foe's services for next season. "Their programme is continuing as scheduled today," said a spokesman at the Cameroon training camp. "I can simply confirm that to you. I believe it (to play the final) was decided during the night." FIFA President Sepp Blatter travelled to Lyon to console the player's family and the Cameroon squad. Answer: Foe Death An "Unbelievable Tragedy" Says Blatter 06/26/2003. Fifa president Sepp Blatter has described the death of Cameroon midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe as an "unbelievable tragedy". The Lyon player collapsed in the 72nd minute of tonight's Confederations Cup semi-final between Cameroon and Colombia. He was taken to the medical centre at Stade Gerland where he died after doctors failed to resuscitate him. "FIFA and the whole football family are shattered by this unbelievable tragedy," said Blatter. "On their behalf, I wish to convey our sincerest condolences to his family and loved ones, to Cameroon football and his club, and express all our support at this painful time. Football has lost a remarkable player and a remarkable man," he added. Answer: Shocked Football World Pays Tribute To Marc-Vivien Foe 06/26/2003. The world of football world has been left stunned by the tragic death of Lyon's Marc-Vivien Foe, who collapsed while playing for Cameroon. The 28-year-old, who spent last season on loan with Manchester City, was taken ill during the Confederations Cup semi-final against Colombia in Lyon tonight. Fifa president Sepp Blatter, who heard the news at the same time as the France and Turkey teams and fans at the Stade de France, said: "Fifa and the whole football family are shattered by this unbelievable tragedy. On their behalf, I wish to convey our sincerest condolences to his family and loved ones, to Cameroon football and his club, and express all our support at this painful time. Football has lost a remarkable player and a remarkable man." Manchester City's chairman John Wardle was among the first of many to pay tribute to the popular and talented star. Wardle expressed his club's sorrow at the sad news. "Foe was wonderful to have around the club," he told BBC Radio Five Live. "He was instrumental in our success on our return to the Premiership and he got on well with everyone as a player and a friend. "He always had a smile on his face and was humble as well. "Foe also scored the last-ever goal at Maine Road and he will go down in history for that. The player had previously given service to West Ham United, moving to Upton Park in 1999 in a £4 million deal. A spokesman for the Hammers, Peter Stewart, told the BBC that Foe always had time for the fans. He said: "I'm absolutely stunned by this news. "Although Marc was only with us a short while, he was a very popular figure at Upton Park and a lovely guy. "He renewed old friendships with us and gave members of staff a big hug when he returned with Man City. "It's dreadful news and on behalf of everyone at West Ham, we would like to pass on our condolences to his family." Marc's manager when he was at West Ham was Harry Redknapp, now in charge of Portsmouth. He was clearly emotional when he heard the news. He said: "You couldn't meet a nicer, more fantastic person than Marc Foe. "He was a special boy - I just can't believe it." Redknapp said the player was in peak physical condition and had interested Manchester United before he broke his leg. Redknapp was keen to bring Foe to Portsmouth and had been speaking to the player in recent days about a move. He had actually faxed an offer through to Marc today which was due to be considered tomorrow by Foe and his agent Willie McKay. McKay had revealed today that they were negotiating an early release from Foe's contract with Lyon in order to stay in the Premiership, where six clubs had expressed interest in securing his services, among them the favourites., Manchester City, and Middlesbrough. But it is not only club officials who wanted to pay tribute to Marc. Liverpool's Steven Gerrard e-mailed Sky Sports to say that as a Liverpool player, Marc-Vivien Foe was someone he had always admired as a player and a great sportsman, and that his death was a huge blow for football. As soon as the news broke, the Manchester City fans' website, Blue Moon, began receiving tributes. "Just heard the news, what a terrible thing to happen," wrote one. "I am sure we all will join in passing on our deepest sympathies to his young family at this very sad time, our thoughts are with you all," another fan wrote. His club Olympique Lyonnais paid tribute on Foe's official website. Their statement said: "Marc-Vivien Foe will leave us the memory of a charming boy, the incarnation of the joy in life. "We will keep of him his bursts of laughter, the music which comes out of the changing room, and his kindness away from the ground. "Marco, we will not forget you." Answer: Henry Dedicates His Goal To Foe 06/26/2003. Arsenal striker Thierry Henry pointed to the heavens after netting France's first goal in the Confederations Cup semi-final victory Turkey, in a mark of respect for Marc-Vivien Foe, news of whose untimely death had been announced just prior top kick-off. Henry later explained his symbolic gesture: "Everyone in the world of football is shocked. The first goal was for him." Foe, who spent last season on loan at Manchester City from Lyon, was carried off on a stretcher after collapsing 15 minutes from the end of Cameroon's 1-0 victory over Columbia, but failed to revive. The Paris match was preceded by a minute's silence for Foe, whose image was shown on the stadium's large screens. "If something like this happened to us, I would not play in the final and I would understand if Cameroon refused to play," French captain Marcel Desailly said. "It was a very emotional moment," midfielder Olivier Dacourt said. "It was very tough to get focused on the game and on what we were doing." "Foe was an outstanding character. He was like a big brother to us," said France goalkeeper Gregory Coupet, a team-mate of Foe's at Lyon. Coupet looked particularly affected by the news. "Our thoughts go to his family. Now life must go on. We had to play this match and pay our respects to him as he was as solid as a rock," he added. The French National coach, Jacques Santini, himself a former Olympique Lyon coach, was clearly devastated by the news and said he'd considered changing his starting line-up at the last minute. "What happened between the warm-up session and the return to the changing rooms can't be expressed. The players did not have their minds set on the match," said Santini. "They looked like they didn't know that they had a semi-final to play. We asked (his former team mates) Sidney (Govou) and Greg (Coupet) if they wanted to be replaced in the starting line-up. Eventually they decided to play. "Even the victory can't lift our mood," Santini added. "There is nothing to say. It's really hard for those who knew him. We are going to miss him. "The players behaved very professionally tonight." Answer: We Must Play On For Foe, Says Milla 06/27/2003. Cameroon legend Roger Milla believes the Confederations Cup final on Sunday has to be played as a tribute to Marc-Vivien Foe. The Lyon midfielder collapsed and died during his side's semi-final win over Colombia last night. FIFA have confirmed the final will still be played and Milla believes it is the right decision. He said: "Yes, I think we have to play on, because Marc wanted to be champion of this tournament," he said. "We are having a meeting with FIFA later, and Sepp Blatter was sat here at breakfast with me a minute ago. I think we must play on, and FIFA say that's good. "It would be a fitting tribute if we were to play. I'm 100 per cent sure Marc would want us to play and I know all the players want to play, even though they are so upset this morning. "We are heartbroken at this news. Marc was a great man and someone we all loved. He was our brother and we must play on Sunday for our brother. "He will be so badly missed by everyone here and I still can't accept that I'll never see him again. "We must come to terms with this tragedy but it will take so long."
