Germany ended South Korea?s World Cup dream with a solitary goal from Michael Ballack. The Koreans tried to come back but in the end failed despite the vociferous support of the 60,000 home crowd.
In a match that failed to live up to pre-match expectations of a riveting semi-final, the Germans had to toil for their victory, with many of their shots being off target.
In an attack down the right flank in the 75th minute, the Germans capitalised on a rare Korean defensive lapse. Ballack found space and first-timed a cross from Oliver Neuville. Goalkeeper Lee Woon Jae blocked the shot but the rebound came back to the German midfielder who left-footed the ball past Lee.
The match started at a fast pace with Germany soon finding its rhythm and settling in with more of the possession. They took the offensive and had more shots at goal than the Koreans although most of them were way off target.
South Korea had a good chance early in the eighth minute when Lee Chun Soo?s shot was saved by German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn. The Korean defence did well to cut off the German feeders to Miroslav Klose, Neuville and Marco Bode. The game was tight and the first half ended without a goal.
As the second half progressed, South Korea slowly gained much of the initiative. The Koreans, with strikers Park Ji Song, Cha Doo Ri and substitute Ahn Jung Hwan, were at times entrenched in the German half.
But as the Koreans pressed forward, the Germans suddenly found the break they were looking for that led to Neuville setting up the best opportunity for Ballack, who unfortunately was booked minutes earlier for a tactical foul and will sit out the final.
That tactical foul by the German midfielder could have cost Korea. Four Koreans were bearing down on a deserted German penalty box when Ballack tripped Lee Chun Soo. That was a golden opportunity lost. The Korean free kick was no consolation as the ball hit the German wall.
South Korea tried to fight back but surprisingly did not seem to have the spirit and strength that they had shown in earlier matches. In the last minutes, Park Ji Song skied the ball at the German penalty area, missing Korea?s last opportunity. In the end, the Koreans bowed out of the tournament, ending their surprising dream run. They lost the match but they are winners and their supporters know that.
As for Germany, once again it scraped through into the final with the narrowest of margins. The German team had been criticised as a lacklustre outfit that showed no outstanding brilliance. But it was true to form as a resilient team that had managed to reach the finals without having to overcome giants such as Argentina, Italy or Spain.
Germany will meet the winner of the match between Brazil and Turkey that will be played in Saitama, Japan, on Wednesday night.
