i think he wants a back four because of Milan's attacking power up front. Gerrard will be the one making the tackles, and alonso string the passes. kewell and garcia to try to supply baros... but it din prevent milan from scoring 3... so he took the gamble, took off finnan, put in hamann to do the tackling, and give gerrad the free role... which worked well...
