Match takes 1...
Question:
Hey ppl...frm 2day,i'll be contributing after-match thoughts...so pls feel free to comment on what i have said.
So for 2day,i'll start with a match of my favourite team...Arsenal's match:
27Nov2002 Stade Olimpico of Rome, Italy
Uefa Champions League
Roma 1-3 Arsenal
2 years ago, Arsenal were realli no-hopers in away European matches. before this season, this was the record: 8matches played,1 Drawn n 7 lost...But now they have gone a huge step forward. THey have so far won at Holland,France & of coz Italy.
Before thies match, bookmakers even offered a Roma -1/4 odds, making Roma the favourites.
Before kick-off, Roma recieved a huge boost as thier influencial captain Francesco Totti was passed fit to lead the line. Arsenal too has their own boost of morale as Oleg Luzhny was also passed fit to filled up the right-back slot for the Gunners. Both teams began the match very cautiously- Arsenal, being the away side, wasn't commited to going forward...and Roma, having clearly done it's homework, didn't pour forward, fearing the pacey counter attacking from Arsenal.
4 mins on,Francesco Totti showed why he is so treasured by the Roma faithfuls when his deft through ball to youngster Antonioli Cassano, who turned Sol Campbell before mis-hitting the ball into the net...a less than glorious finshing to follow up from a glorious moment of genius from Totti.
Arsenal looked to be buried...beacause the Italians are well-known for being able to defend very very very well.So well they will put Liverpool to shame. But then, Samba magic allowed Gilberto Silva to dance through the Roman midfield to lay a pin-point across the edge of penalty box for Thierry Henry. Ok, time for the Thierry Henry Show, sorry it started 6 mins late. what happened next was technically bueatiful. Using the outside of the foot to control the ball into a superb striking position, Henry went on to curl a low beauty into the bottom far corner into the net.1-1 game on. the rest of the 1st half went on in scrappy fashion as both team struggled to keep possession. Totti did have a glorious chance though. He was put clear to shoot from a cross from Cafu, instead of making the ball go into the net in the shortest way via the near post,he tried to be too clever n go for the more spectacular, difficult shot into the far post. He hit the ball well, but Pascal Cygan suddenly out of no where came to block the shot off the line.Top class defending.
In the second half, it was a continuation of how the half ended-doggy. Roma then began to slowly put on the pressure as the home team, & seemed getting closer to breaking the tie. Then, Arsenal striked.Typically. in the 70th min, Luzhny found a forest of space to send a long ball into the Roman box. It seemed easy defending routine for Roma, especially when Panucci was against Henry, who can jump, but can't really head that well. True enough, Henry only wa able to inflict a slight touch, and then came off Panucci's back. Thierry then showed why he ws 10 yrs younger than his other marker Cafu when he reacted first to smacked home the loose ball thru Antonioli's legs.
Roma have to attack now. playing themselves into Arsenal's hands. during a quick counter attack, Roma conceded a freekick 5 yards away from the edge of Roma's box. Pires provided the decoy, running over the ball, teeing it up for Henry to unleashed a unstoppable curler into the top right hand corner of the net.Poetry in motion.
Roma was buried by then. So Capello decided to have a little bit of fun by bringing on the once great Gabriel Batistuta, to foul the Arsenal players, literally. Coz once he came on,he just did nothing but commited fouls that will make Roy Keane smile. one of that fouls even brought him a yrllow card.
So the taht's the end of the Henry Show, it's Cygan's turn to continue from where he left off. Several outstanding clearances and headers ensure Totti and co will not find their way back into the match.
at the end of the match,Capello hailed Arsenal as the best team in Europe currently. But, from what i see,Arsenal still has some way to go. it seems like Arsenal's defence are too prone to one -twos from opponents, as Roma showed and almost punished Arsenal. But overall, it was a night to remember.
