France make World Cup history on way to goal-less exit
SEOUL, June 11 (AFP) - France made World Cup history on
Tuesday - but for all the wrong reasons - as surprise packages Denmark and Senegal sailed into the second round.
Even the return of French star Zinedine Zidane could not prevent the World Cup holders crashing out of the competition with a 2-0 defeat to Denmark while Senegal survived a second-half fightback from Uruguay to clinch their place with a 3-3 draw.
Later in the day, another unfashionable footballing nation, Ireland, eased into the knockout phase with a comfortable 3-0 win over Saudi Arabia, while Germany managed to avoid joining France and Uruguay as the third former winner of the trophy to fall at the first hurdle when they beat Cameroon 2-0 in an ill-tempered affair which produced a record 14 bookings and two sendings-off.
France's ignominious exit from the competition made them the first reigning world champions to fail to score a single goal at the World Cup.
Their other Group A matches ended in a 0-0 draw with Uruguay and, in a major upset that began their fall, the champions went down to a shock 1-0 defeat against debutants Senegal on opening day.
It was a far cry from France's illuminating display in Paris four years ago when they scored nine goals and conceded only one in the first round on their way to the Cup.
They are also the first defending champions to return home after the first round since Brazil in England in 1966.
Injuries, especially to Zidane, and suspensions cost the French dearly but coach Roger Lemerre was not seeking excuses.
"We just weren't up to it," he said. "There's nothing to say - we don't deserve to qualify for the last 16."
Denmark put up a defensive display crowned by a goal in each half from Dennis Rommedahl and Jon Dahl-Tomasson.
Zidane, playing his first match of the competition but with heavy strapping on his injured left thigh, could not lift his side. But the real blame was shouldered by the strikers, including two of the most prolific forwards in Europe in Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet, who failed to deliver a single goal in three games.
Senegal's unlikely Odyssey continued as they raced into a 3-0 half-time lead over the Uruguayans thanks to a dubious penalty award, a blatantly offside goal and one moment of pure magic from Pape Bouba Diop, only for the robust South Americans to roar back to level the scores.
But it was not enough to dampen the celebrations in the Senegalese camp after that famous victory over France, already talked about as one of the greatest World Cup upsets ever, and a 1-1 draw with Denmark.
The Uruguayans were left to contemplate what might have been had they not succumbed so easily in their opening fixture with Denmark.
Jubilant Senegalese coach Bruno Metsu, a Frenchman, said: "To make it into the group of the 16 best teams in the world is extraordinary."
Bouba Diop, scorer of that momentuous goal against France, said: "It's a great feeling for us and a great achievement."
The Senegalese and the Danes must now wait until Wednesday, when Group F is decided, to learn the identity of their second round opponents, as Argentina, England and Sweden are all battling for the two places on offer.
For Ireland, goals from in-form striker Robbie Keane, defender Gary Breen and winger Damien Duff secured a deserved win for Mick McCarthy's Ireland side at a rain-lashed Yokohama International Stadium.
Qualification capped a superb first-phase performance for Ireland, left in turmoil after talismanic skipper Roy Keane was kicked out of the squad on the eve of the tournament.
Germany thanked a clinical finish from Marco Bode and Miroslav Klose's fifth goal of the tournament to see them through as Group E winners and avoid crashing out in the first phase for the first time since 1938.
Klose reinforced his position as the tournament's top scorer but the match in Shizuoka set an unwelcome World Cup record as each side had seven players booked and the Germans had Carsten Ramelow sent off while Cameroon's Patrick Suffo was also shown red.
Germany and Ireland now face the qualifiers from among Spain, South Africa and Paraguay.
