afeditab & lisinopril bad for my mother
Question:
hi, I am living in Spain, my mother lives in phoenix. She told me
yesterday that her gums are bleeding for two months now, and she only
read the afeditab label last week! Plus, she also has a new, dry cough
that is from the lisoprinil. Her doctor tells her to not worry, to use
a sensitive toothpaste. But I say no way. He wants her sick so he can
keep prescribing something. Why else do these laboratories print
warnings? It must be serious, bleeding gums is a sign of something
wrong. can anyone tell me how to find information on this, or if they
have heard of this? what does this mean, bleeding gums? I want my
mother off of these drugs, and I want her to lower her blood pressure
naturally without it killing her. She never has been on medication in
all her life, until she met this man who saw a blank chart, and coulnt
understand how this 75 year old has never been sick. She is currently
stressed out due to family issues, but other than that, no diseases. I
am having her move here with me, to remove her from the issues that
she shouldnt have to deal with at 75. I am working with her daily on
getting her the right diet, exercise, relaxation techniques, etc. she
is taking fish oil pills, and now her BP is stable. But at what price?
Can anyone tell me what I should know, or how to find the info?
Helpless in Spain!-Patricia

Answer:
Hey trude, how are you doing?

High blood pressure adds to the workload of the heart and arteries. If it continues for a long time, the heart and arteries may not function properly.

These problems may be less likely to occur if blood pressure is controlled. Do not suddenly stop taking nifedipine.

Check with your doctor for the best way to reduce gradually the amount you are taking before stopping completely. In addition to the use of the medicine your doctor has prescribed, appropriate treatment for your high blood pressure may include weight control and care in the types of food you eat, especially foods high in sodium (salt).

Make sure you discuss with your doctor a safe amount of exercise for your medical problem.
As a reminder, grapefruit juice may block the breakdown of nifedipine (Afeditab CR) by the liver.

If this happens, blood levels of nifedipine could be increased and this could cause an increase in side effects. Lisinopril and Hydrochlorothiazide side effects (dry cough) usually do not require medical attention.

However, report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are
bothersome. Check your blood pressure and pulse rate regularly; this is important while you are taking nifedipine.

Best wishes,
