Birth Control and Acetaminophen
Question:
My girlfriend finally went on birth control pills and said her ob/gyn cautioned her against taking anything with acetaminophen in it.

This is the first I've heard of any such thing. She's devostated as she uses Mydol for a cure-all and i'm confused as in its pretty much in any pain-reliever out thereand my doctor says its hogwash. While its possible to find something that doesn't have it...it's going to take some searching which I'll do if I need to.

Yes, we should all listen to our doctors and she may have a condition i'm not aware of that needs this step. I'm just courious if anyone knows about this or has been told this. I know the antibiotics and other random stuff. I'd like to stay at 99% effectiveness or as close as possible!!!!!!
Answer:

She can certainly take Tylenol with her oral contraceptives. Be aware that Midol and Acetaminophen are two different drugs. Acetaminophen is not a blood thinner where Midol contains Aspirin and therefore, is. The only reason she shouldn't is in the event that she is allergic to it. If this isn't the case, then the only interaction that Tylenol has with oral contraceptives is that it can (in some cases only) increase the potency of the contraceptive - nothing more. Your doctor is absolutely right. Tell her she can take the Midol if it works for her.
