How do you teach a dog to catch treats.
Question:

I want to teach Archie a new trick, and I've been trying to teach him to catch a treat. He just sits there though and lets the treat bounce off his head and fall to the floor

I don't let him get it when it falls to the floor but he has not caught it yet and we've been trying for a few days

Any tips?

Answer:

What you need is competition in the form of at least one more dog, and he wont dare let it fall to the floor. Sorry not very sensible.

Have never had this problem, make sure the treat is really desirable and do one or two pretend throws to get the gob open and then toss it in - your next question will be "how do I improve my aim"

Answer:

He will get there in the end Finn was like Archie at first but now he is attempting to catch the treat. If it reaches the floor Star gets it

Just tried it again with Finn he can catch it now . I am only standing about 2 foot away from him and aiming for his mouth though.

Answer:

Mine can't catch either - however, they're getting quite good at "heading" the treat

Answer:

When i had my 2 Rough Collies the had no intention of trying to catch treats. It was a case of "just drop it here please i can pick it off the floor thank you". Now with my Springer Spaniel she'll catch any treat from any distance

Answer:

Hmmm guess I will keep trying... maybe I will recruit Ziggy to nick the treats from uder Archie if he doesn't catch them!

Answer:

Hi I think he might get better as he gets older. Meg was useless at it when she was a pup up until a year. shes now two and a half and catches them, in any direction

Answer:

Do you know I can`t remember how I taught my lot to catch it But what Thordell says about competition sounds right

Answer:

Tuti, try getting him to catch something else first. Treats tend to be small and not so easily focused on. Get a rolled up sock, or something else that is soft. Once he is catching the soft article give your command 'catch' just before you toss the article so that he knows what to expect. Once he is catching fairly large objects then progress to the smaller treats, giving the 'catch' before you actually throw.

Answer:

tuti do it the otherway around let tuti throw it and you cathch it make an example might work
