Dog snatching food from children.
Question:
hi all, we have a bit of a problem with nemo he just will not stop snatching food, he takes from the kids little dinner table, snatches from the kids hands and also eats his own food so fast and then starts on bonnies pushing her out the way Im at my wits end, ive tried telling him a firm NO! tried putting him in the kitchen every time he does it, tried making him stay in his bed while we eat and nothing works why is he so greedy?? and is there anything i can do?? thanx in advance kimbles and lil bean x x x x Answer: Sorry Kimberley... have to be brief.. ..teach Nemo to sit and stay, ..shut him away at mealtimes, ..put a large stone or ball in his bowl to prevent wolfing his meals down. If the behaviour started recently remember extreme hunger in dogs can be a sign of illness like diabetes. Answer: mini nemo has always been a greedy little blighter, ever since we got him I just cant stand him snatching food from the kids hands, as toddlers they quite often have snacks and things and i dont really want to have to lock him away everytime they eat or he will be permanently in the kitchen Answer: you have to be firm with him use a strong voice demand and say NO and mean it he will soon get the grip of this word when theres food around but be firm and good luck Answer: Have you taught him the leave command? We taught Finn not too grab food from us by using the leave command. Info on it from SB Answer: We had a similar situation with Max our Dally. When we rescued Max he had a tendency to snatch food out of your hand if you werent watching him. Also when being given a treat he would lunge up for it. We realised that he had learnt the lunging behaviour from always having been thrown food and titbits when he lived with a Husky. Luckily we have trained him out of this behaviour. I taught him to sit and wait his turn for a treat. Taught him the command NO in a strong voice. Also what I found helped was when I had a treat for him to not offer it to him with open hands, but to keep the treat inside my fist and let him sniff at my hand and only release the treat when he sat and didnt lunge. Info on it from SB we have tried carole and will leave his own food until told he can have it but when it comes to the kids having food, he takes it right from their hands i want to nip this in the bud now before lil bean arrives Answer: Originally Posted by nemosmummy we have tried carole and will leave his own food until told he can have it but when it comes to the kids having food, he takes it right from their hands i want to nip this in the bud now before lil bean arrives try a water pistol everytime he goes to try and snatch food shoot the water at him or is he like mine likes having it sprayed at him Answer: Stop giving treats from the hand and teach him no is my suggestion Answer: thanx everyone, we are going to carry on with the firm NO! and continue giving him a time out when he continues to do it, just hope we can sort this out and soon, x x x x x x x x x Copyright ? 2006 - 2007 www.thankhealth.com Privacy Policy
