A royal wedding of dogs in royal city of Jaipur
:-
Jaipur | April 26, 2005 1:25:10 PM IST
Dancing eunuchs, over 300 invitees and a marriage procession befitting a king! It was the perfect nuptial for Shamsher and Diana, a canine couple from Jaipur who tied the knot in a traditional Hindu ceremony.
The groom, owned by a wealthy dog lover, was escorted to the marriage venue with a band of self-styled musicians and dozens of friends, family and of course dogs.
The marriage lawns were bedecked with flowers, particularly Jasmines - the bride's favourite -- and policemen had been deployed to keep at bay the gatecrashers.
Entry was strictly by invitation and each of the guests had to show the personalised wedding invitation to be allowed in to the huge make-shift tent put up for the 350-odd guests.
The bride herself, with a resplendent red drape, essential for any Hindu marriage, wrapped round her neck, awed all, including the groom with the only interruption in the picture perfect ceremony being a minor scuffle between the bride and the groom, who went on a barking spree but stopped after being bitten by his future wife.Shilpi, an invitee, was more than thrilled at the amazing ceremony. "The marriage procession was in a big and traditional way. Even, in the marriage ceremony of humans, we have seen something lacking but here everything was very nice and both the bride and groom were looking very satisfied," Shilpi said.
The priest though a bit scared initially of the bulky Labrador pair found comfort after the owners took charge of the pair and helped him through the rest of the ceremony. The overweight bride initially refused to complete the full seven rounds of the bonfire, crucial part of the custom, and had to be lured with hefty dose of doggy treats for the last two rounds.
"I performed all the rituals for the dogs just like human beings. There was no problem. The arrangement was very nice and I really enjoyed the whole thing," said Manish Sharma, the priest. The marriage, owners said, was a love match with Shamsher falling for Diana, who is a neighbour, at first site during a walk in the park last year. The casanova has since, his owner said, often escaped home and jumped fences to meet her and was twice bitten by rivals vying for her attention. (ANI)
