Bowlingual
Question:
Woof, woof! I want to play with you NO, this dog isn't speaking. But we can translate his woofs now. A computer gadget has been launched in Japan to help dog owners make head and.. err, tail, of their pets' barks. The Bowlingual - unveiled in August last year by toymaker Takara - hit the stores in Japan yesterday. The device comprises an 8-cm microphone to be attached to a dog collar and transmits sounds to a palm-sized console (above). The console, equipped with a small display, immediately classifies the sounds into six emotional categories - frustration, menace, joy, sorrow, demand, and self-expression. It then shows Japanese phrases to fit the emotional state, such as - I am sad; I want to play; and I am super angry... I am going to explode! The Japanese love affair with pet-related computers is long-standing and now for just US$120 ($213) dog lovers can understand their pets' emotions. A TOY FOR DOG OWNERS A spokesperson for Takara, Ms Yoko Watanabe, said: 'You can never tell what dogs are thinking without becoming a dog yourself. But we hope dog lovers will use Bowlingual as an additional tool for them to play with their pets.' Takara, following joint research with the Japan Acoustic Laboratory, claims to have made the device more compatible with more than 50 dog species, from Chihuahuas to German Shepherds. Sales of Bowlingual in Tokyo's prestigious Ginza shopping district were booming - with early deliveries sold out. Ms Harumi Ogishima, spokesperson for a toy store in the district, said: 'We have received a number of phone calls from customers all day about Bowlingual, and we will start selling the product again as soon as we can get another shipment.' Takara has follow-up products in the pipeline, allowing dog messages to be sent over the internet or to expand the technology to new animals. - Wire services Answer: Woof, woof!
