When getting a dog, shouldnt just based on the appearence. And definately not whether it's a popular breed and u can see it anywhere.. so u choose another breed. One gotta read thru abt the breed, know its temperamental, diseases that it's prone to, and also how much exercise it needs, the attention and diet...etc. And also, the grooming and training. Especially if you are getting a puppy, read more abt puppy training and what kinda stages it would go thru..etc.
Eg: alot of ppl bought Jack Russel Terrier without knowing its temperamental but just coz "it's so cute!" or "it's the starhub dog!". After awhile, they abandone or re-sell it..etc... coz they cant stand it being hyperactive.

waiting4u: I'm not saying all. But out of those that need to be rehomed... quite a high percentage is JRT...
wowkaoz: not based on breeds/appearence. But of coz when you get ur dog, you'll have to see the interaction and chemistry too. But tat's the later part. You gotta find out which breed suit you or whether you suit the breed that you want.
LesPaul: Nothing much.. just that I'm very interested in animal welfare, hence fostered and rehomed a few needy dogs. Also helped in Mongrel's club in fostering. I have adopted a few too.
Currently I have one mongrel, one english cocker spaniel and one Havanese-cross.
Previously had fostered a few mongrel puppy, border collie cross, chihuahua, parson russel terrier n shihtzu...
It's interesting but heart-breaking at the same time to foster a dog... coz when he/she gotta go for a home where they can call home.. it's so sad but yet happy..

i've got a cocker spaniel given to me for free , i saw a really sweet one at SPCA . try not to buy , you can save a dogs live in spca .

yup... if not do surf around some doggies or pets forum.. alot of dogs are being put up for adoption.. try to adopt instead of buying..
as buying from pet shop will only increase the demands of breeding puppy mill. If you really wana buy, try to get from breeder.. but not those backyard breeder.
