Dogs can be good for your health
Question:
Owning a dog can not only be rewarding in terms of the love and affection you receive, but it can also be good for your health too.
Which is why Dogs Trust, the UK's largest dog welfare charity, has launched the Canine Charter for Human Health to increase awareness of the health benefits of owning a dog.
GPs, counsellors, therapists and anyone working with the improvement of health and wellbeing are invited to contact Dogs Trust on 020 7837 0006 to obtain copies of the Charter for display in their premises.
CANINE CHARTER FOR HUMAN HEALTH
1) OWNING A DOG HELPS TO REDUCE STRESS
2) OWNING A DOG CAN HELP TO REDUCE BLOOD PRESSURE
3) DOG OWNERS VISIT THE DOCTOR LESS
4) DOG OWNERS TAKE MORE EXERCISE
5) DOGS CAN HELP TO INCREASE THE ATTENTION SPAN OF CHILDREN WITH LEARNING DIFFICULTIES
6) OWNING A DOG CAN BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM
7) DOG OWNERS ARE MORE LIKELY TO RECOVER FROM A HEART ATTACK
8)PEOPLE WHO HAVE A DOG TEND TO LIVE LONGER
9) SOME DOGS CAN BE TRAINED TO DETECT EPILEPTIC SEIZURES
10) DOGS CAN HELP SAFEGUARD AGAINST LONELINESS AND DEPRESSION
Remarkably, some dogs can even be trained to detect the onset of an epileptic seizure and warn his owner of the danger. It has even been found that a dog can help to increase the attention span of children with learning difficulties.
Clarissa Baldwin, Chief Executive of Dogs Trust, says:
"The Canine Charter for Human Health is a simple ten-point plan which effectively promotes why dogs are good for you. We advise anyone working with public health that the Charter is an excellent tool to display or hand out. Dogs are loyal companions which give so much unconditional love and bring great happiness to their owners."
Alan Milburn, Secretary of State for Health, has already given his full backing for the Canine Charter for Human Health when he recently visited Dogs Trust Darlington and was presented with a copy of the Charter.
