lump behind ear
Question:
hi. I'm new here, but I am in need of a diagnosis. I was just working around the house, and I pulled my hair back behind my ear, only to discover a lump in the center behind my ear. It doesn't really hurt right now, but if I touch it around the base, it does. Could this be mastoiditis or a swollen lymph gland?

Answer:
Hey Rebekah, how are you doing?

Treatment may include antibiotics or removal of the cyst. Benign ear cysts and tumors are usually slow-growing and may disappear on their own.

Sebaceous cysts are the most common cysts seen in the ear and usually occur behind the ear, within the ear canal, or on the scalp. The exact cause is unknown, but cysts may occur when oils are produced in a skin gland faster than they can be excreted out of the gland.

If the cyst or tumor is not painful and does not interfere with hearing, treatment is not necessary. Call for an appointment with a health care provider if you have symptoms of a benign ear cyst or tumor and there is discomfort, pain, or hearing loss.
