Bug bites
Question:
I have 3 bug bites, that I probably scratched too much. I think they are mosquito bites. Now it looks like they have formed blisters and oozing. I have cleaned with hydrogen peroxide and neosporin for a couple of days. Does this sound infected and am I doing the right things? If not what should I do? Thank you for your time.
Mary

Answer:
It doesn't sound like your bites are infected at this point. Yes, you are doing the right thing. They should dry up within the next couple days.

Answer:
The summer months are heralded by the arrival of the usual stinging and biting pests. Thank goodness for tea tree oil. Renowned for its antifungal and antiseptic qualities, not many people appreciate that tea tree oil also speeds up healing and has a mild analgesic effect that reduces pain and inflammation associated with irritating insect bites. I find it especially good for flea bites. I have several pets and during the summer months it is inevitable that they get bitten.

Answer:
Tea tree oil has proven antiseptic, antibacterial and fungicidal properties. It has been found to be effective on animals. However, the use of tea tree oil to control fleas has resulted in the death of many animals. Animals (and humans!) have been poisoned (sometimes fatally) from topical use or accidental ingestion of tea tree oil. The animals lick their skin/fur and accidentally ingest it. You cannot get it into your eyes, and it must be kept from children. From a toxicologic point of view, Tea Tree oil is comparable to oil of turpentine, which is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and skin. In fact, Tea Trea oil makes for a really good paint solvent!
