What are signs of Bone Infection
Question:
Nine days ago I was cutting landscape timbers with a chopsaw.( I think the real name is a miter saw ) I was knelt down beside it and I went to repostion myself or something and I ran my knee into it. It caught the inner side of my leg and the very top of my knee. it looked like it hit the knee cap on the top inner side and took a chunk of meat out. about an inch long and a little wider than a fat pencil. It did not hurt at the time just stung bad, it didn't bleed much either. The last 3 days seems like it is swelling and it is now hurting. I got a pescription of amoxicillen 2 days after. My daughter and a few other friends said I should worry about bone infection. Can anyone tell me the signs of bone infection. I was laid-off from my job of 15 years, 2 months ago, and with no insurance, I didn't go to the Dr. I thought it would be alright, but the bone infection thing has me worried. Everyone says it is bad. Thanks in advance for any info on bone infection Answer: Hey gizzy, how are you doing? Signs of bone infection show up on x-rays about 10 to 14 days after symptoms first appear. See your health care provider promptly if you have signs of an infection anywhere in the body. In adults Osteomyelitis may begin as nothing more than pain in a bone. However, other symptoms are chills, fever, nausea, general ill feeling (malaise), pain, redness, warmth, and swelling in the area around the bone, sweating more than usual, swelling in the ankles, feet, or legs, and tenderness and limited motion in the area around the bone. Bacteria may infect a bone through an open wound, during surgery, or from a bone fracture that has broken the skin. This is the most common cause of osteomyelitis. Antibiotics given by shots into your veins are usually an effective treatment for osteomyelitis. You may need to take antibiotics for several weeks or months. It is recommended, before operating your saw, it must be firmly mounted to your workbench or other rigid frame. After completing cut release power switch and wait for blade to stop before returning saw to raised position. The federal law known as COBRA (sometimes called "continuation coverage") protects the health care rights of workers who are laid off, as well as spouses and dependents in certain situations. It enables you to keep your exact same benefits for 18 months, and sometimes up to 36 months, depending on the circumstances. Best wishes, Answer: Keep the wound as clean as you can. Rinse your wound with Peroxide, cover it with sterile gauze, and wrap it gently with clean gauze wrap then apply tape to hold it securely (but not tightly). Repeat this twice a day. Rest your leg and keep your leg elevated as much as you can. Like BKDaniels said, if it shows signs of redness around throughout the swelling, red streaking up or down your leg, yellow or green pus in the wound or if you develop fevers, you'll need to have further care. Also, your wound might need stitches. If you can't go to the doctor for this, at least send someone out to Wal Mart or wherever for some Steri-Strips to apply to it to help keep it closed. You can contact your local Health Department to get some guidance on programs offered to those who are uninsured - they can be of great help! Answer: Hey gizzy, how are you doing? I do apprecitae all the info. I will check into the insurance, haven't thought of that. The swelling isn't to bad. It hurts really bad and gets irratated when I take the bandage off during the day to let it try to dry out and scab. As soon as I cover it, the pain stops. Thanks again for your info. Truely Gizzy
