Chairman of the Anti-smoking Programme and Deputy Director of Health Education Section at the Ministry of Health, Dr Salah Ali, said the shisha was more dangerous than a cigarette.
“There is a popular misconception that the hubble bubble is not harmful but, on the contrary, it is and causes much more damage than an ordinary cigarette,” he said yesterday.
Dr Ali made this appeal on the eve of the Eid festival because, according to him, more people smoke the shisha more frequently. “Though they smoke the shisha occasionally of and on, during Eid, it is seen as a fashion to indulge,” he said. “Many people who are not regular smokers also indulge in it during the Eid days and that is also not proper.”
He said the problem was that smoking the shisha was socially acceptable. “This is a bad signal and we have to all try and change that attitude of the people.”
